Grinding Guards And Orthotics in Omaha

Both nightguards and orthotics have an important place in the world of TMJ treatment. Orthotics, sometimes known as bite splints, not only relieve pain by preventing destruction of the teeth from grinding, but also reposition the bite to correct a misaligned jaw joint. Nightguards or teeth grinding guards are designed for the exclusive purpose of preventing damage to patients’ teeth if they grind their teeth in their sleep.
Orthotics
Orthotics used in TMJ therapy help TMJ patients who have a problem with their bite. Orthotics can be either removable or fixed, depending on the patient’s personal needs and condition. An orthotic can placed and/or worn only after Dr. Roubal has examined you and found your ideal bite using our K7 computer. We then take impressions of your teeth and create the orthotic that fits you’re your teeth. Fixed orthotics are bonded to your teeth so that the orthotic cannot become dislodged or removed without the help of the dentist. The orthotic is then worn to keep your jaw in this new, ideal position. Some patients find that the orthotic is the solution for their TMJ, while others will seek a more permanent fix that builds upon the results that they achieved with their orthotic.
Orthotics are meant to be worn 24/7 and patients are expected to wear them as much as possible so that treatment can be truly effective.
Teeth Grinding Guards
Nightguards or grinding guards are like bumpers for your teeth. Nightguards are custom-made to fit each patient properly. Though you’ll find nightguards sold in stores, it is ideal to have one personally fitted for the shape of your mouth and teeth for a comfortable fit in order to experience the best results possible. Teeth grinding guards that are not custom designed are uncomfortable and too bulky for most patients, which means that they are worn less consistently and are therefore ineffective.
